Kerra Holt - Knight Errant WIP

Description

This is something new for myself (as opposed to something I drew over a year ago ;p ) Last month I got the new Star Wars novel "Knight Errant" about the adventures of Jedi Knight Kerra Holt who is stuck deep in Sith controlled space all alone. Now the novel isn't to be confused with the comic book series of the same name, also written by the author. The novel is actually continuing the storyline started in the first mini-series of the comic (which I haven't read, I'll need to wait for the trade paperback).

So this will be a mini - spoiler free - review of the novel.

Kerra Holt is a young Jedi Knight stuck in Sith territory, on her own after a mission she was on with other Jedi ended in tragedy (most likely chronicled in the comic book). And many of the Sith Lords are fighting amongst themselves trying to control their on territories and the region is not very stable, so knowledge of hyper space routes is not easy to come by, so it's not like she can just find a ship and jump back to Republic Space.

The novel is structured a lot like a serial, with three different adventures, with our Knight Errant dealing with a specific Sith lord in each story. And they do flow well together to make a solid read. Kerra is a lot like Caine (Kung Fu) or David Banner (Bill Bixby's Hulk) or similar roaming hero that gets caught up in these adventures.

The setting is about a 1,000 years before the events in Episode I, so it was very refreshing that this story wasn't bogged down or had to worry about the ton of Expanded Universe canon that has pretty much made the current Star Wars timeline a very cluttered place. And we aren't dealing with these large-scale issues and multi-character plots. It's just a story about a single Jedi Knight who finds herself in these situations and she's also looking to cause some trouble for the Sith at the same time.

It also helps that Kerra is a very well written, interesting character. She's not on some grand scale quest to find the meaning of the Force, nor is she part of some prophecy (at least none that have been revealed ;p ). She's just a Jedi trying to survive in enemy space and help whomever she can along the way.

We also get to see a lot of Sith. Sith drama, sith political conflict, actual Sith conflict ;p Plus, each Sith lord has their own method of ruling their own territory.

I do recommend this book, especially to anyone who prefer heavy Jedi adventure :D or if you want to see some cool (often crazy) Sith Lords.

About the sketch: I pretty much went with Kerra's design for the comic book (they actually have a few page sneak preview of the comic in the novel). Her attire, lightsaber, and blaster. And though I did draw her with short hair, I had to give her long bangs, it's just my way ;p When it comes to coloring her I will differ to the author's description of Kerra in the book. While in the comic she has light skin, the author actually describes her with a dark complexion; brown skin, dark hair, and hazel eyes.

Just a small update on my Kerra Holt WIP. Just added the base colors :D And I scrapped the original sketch
