I was nearly done with this Commission when I went on "hiatus" last year. Got almost all the painting complete but I still needed to touch up her hair.
The proper title for this piece is "Mara Jade Deadly 2" or as I affectionately know it as "The One I Should Have Drawn in the First Place"
The client really let me do what I want with this piece so I decided to try to improve on what I did with the first "Deadly" picture, which was only my second Mara drawing and though it does seem fairly popular, I was never too happy with it. I really wanted to make Mara look like she does in the Japanese covers of the New Jedi Order novels; I was never a fan of Shannon McRandle as a live model for Mara, but then again the first time I read the Zahn novels I pictured Mara being black .
Once again I drew Mara with her shoto. I'm really not much for dual blade wielding but the shorter lightsaber just seemed to suit her.
I had a look at the other Deadly pic, and though this one is cooler I don't see what's wrong with the other one.
Love the white cape. It is much more interesting than a black one would have been.
And I object to the use of the word shoto. It always seems stupid to me, considering there is nothing Japanese about Star Wars. It's like Lucas was forced to cave to pressure from his nerd fanbase to add something Japanese to Star Wars. Not that I claim that I am not a nerd, or that I dislike anime, but it just feels wrong...
From what I gather Luke created the shorter lightsaber, a shoto, to counter the Light Whip, like a rapier/dagger technique. It was the weapon Mara used in her final duel with Jacen.

huh...didn't no that..I did know of Star Wars nanomolecular stilletos which are one use blades capable of penetrating any material like a lightsaber...and I do know about the multi-mode saber...capable of the lengthening the blade twice the normal length...and in one case thrice. Can be used for sudden suprise stabbing attacks...or like a huge area sweeper if your capable enough to swing it. I loses its handling characteristics of the smaller blades. light a short sword can be used to stab and block more...but has a limited range...while the claymore...or two handed long sword..has reach...and power but can not do more fancy moves to attack or protect.

My dissatisfaction with my first "Deadly" pic is more from my own taste. I just felt I could have done better, that's all.
And this is her trademark outfit that she's worn in serveral comics and on the cover of novels.
I can't object to the use of the word "shoto" but Lucas himself as well as other creators have said that The Clone Wars series the 2D and current series have an anime influence to them, and yet they look like anime in that "not in the slightest" kind of way. The first series was done in that "for people who can't draw" simplistic design a la "Power Puff Girls" "Samurai Jack" style. And the current series looks even less like anime. If it were hand drawn I would say it would like more like Disney's Atlantis.
So for the Japanese influence, anime certainy doesn't apply, but one of Lucas' inspirations for the Jedi was Samurai warriors.

Really? Sometimes I think the author's in the expanded universe seem to run out of ideas on how to use the normal tools that they keep coming up with new gimmicks.
